| SACRED WELLS Sacred wells are to be found throughout the British Isles. Holy wells have been visited by pilgrims over the centuries to seek solace or healing or to connect with nature. Many wells are places of healing and the waters are used in various ways to bring about healing of mind, body and spirit. Wells and healing springs are to be found at feminine, goddess sites. Clouties, pieces of cloth, are sometimes left at these magical sites. The clouties are used to remove illness. The person ties a piece of cloth around or wears against the area of the body that holds the ailment. On arrival at the well the person loosely ties the cloth to a branch overhanging the sacred well and then requests healing from the spirit of the well. As the cloth falls to the ground and rots healing is said to occur. Well dressing, an honouring of the spirit of the well, is still carried out in parts of the United Kingdom.
